Trackbed Stabilisation
Tensar trackbed stabilisation systems are used internationally, delivering track construction and renewal schemes quickly, economically and safely. Our geogrids are used to mechanically stabilise track ballast, sub-ballast and blanket layers; to increase trackbed stiffness, reduce variability, minimise track settlement and ballast degradation.
Also, our geogrids have been designed to interlock efficiently with granular materials to provide confinement of the aggregate, thereby limiting movement of the particles under rail traffic load. This reduces deformations and creates a mechanically stabilised layer with improved stiffness and strength.

Permanent and Temporary Reinforced Soil Retaining Walls & Slopes
Tensar’s permanent and temporary reinforced soil retaining wall and slope systems are also regularly used on railway projects to form approach embankments, bridge abutments, retaining walls and steep vegetated cuttings.
Above ground, retaining walls are vertical, or near-vertical, structures designed to create level areas on sloping sites to maximise development space; to create terraces for infrastructure to run along slopes; and to provide additional support to natural slopes at risk of failure.

While Tensar stabilisation geogrids and our reinforced soil wall and slopes systems were already approved for use by Network Rail and have been used successfully on the railway for decades, the latest RISQS audit also covered the company’s design services.

Mechanical stabilisation of track ballast and sub-ballast has been proven to increase trackbed stiffness, reduce trackbed variability, to minimise settlement and ballast degradation and to smooth trackbed transitions.
Tensar has developed a range of stabilisation geogrids specifically for railways, with larger apertures, allowing effective particle confinement and mechanical interlock with coarse railway ballast. Tensar geogrids have gained Network Rail Product Acceptance Certification for the structural stabilisation of ballasted trackbed.
